16th Atlantic Regional Director - Janet Y. Bivins, Esq.
Soror Janet Y. Bivins, Esquire, a life member, has been a Zeta for 33 years. She has served and led the sorority on every level of the sisterhood including, National Legal Advisory Council, Zeta Legacy Club, Atlantic Regional Representative to the National Nominating Committee, Pennsylvania Phylacter, 7th Pennsylvania State Director (Chairman of the Atlantic Region State Directors) and the 25th Basileus of Beta Delta Zeta Chapter located in Philadelphia, PA, in which she was elected to serve two terms. Most recently she served as the 26th Chairman of the National Executive Board and in April of 2012 was the fifth inductee into the Pennsylvania Zeta Hall of Fame.
Beginning her career in the Zeta family as an Archonette in 1977, Soror Bivins shares legacy status with her mother, past National Trustee and Missouri State Director, Soror Sarah M. Felton Bivins (61 years in Zeta) and her sister, past Ohio State Director, Soror Cheryl A. B. Christie (37 years in Zeta). The Bivins Legacy was the first to serve as National Co-Directors of the Zeta Legacy Club which is referenced on page 102 in the Torchbearers of a Legacy history book. Soror Bivins, her mother, and sister, were all initiated into Theta Beta Chapter at Tuskegee University. In addition to her aunt, cousin and second cousin, the most recent addition to their legacy as of April 2010, is her niece, Soror Angela M. Christie. While matriculating at Tuskegee, Soror Bivins earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and went on to the University of Pennsylvania Law School to earn the Juris Doctorate degree. Soror Bivins transferred her membership from Theta Beta Chapter to Beta Delta Zeta Chapter in 1984 and has experienced uninterrupted membership in the Atlantic Region since that time.
Professionally, Soror Bivins has worked for E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont) in Wilmington, Delaware for more than 19 years where she manages litigation on a national docket of toxic tort and commercial cases as corporate counsel. Committed to diversity in the workplace, she co-founded the Minority Counsel Network, a network of minority lawyers within DuPont Legal and all attorneys of color in their primary law firms. Additionally, she has conducted presentations regarding substantive legal and diversity issues to the American Bar Association, National Bar Association, Defense Research Institute, Women in Products Liability and the Minority Corporate Counsel Association. She is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and the Supreme Court of the United States. She has been a director on eight non-profit boards outside of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
